a stupid question

When will the Tatagatha undo these 42 useless autumns
And toss them away
Into now?

Quand le Tatagatha ira défaire ces 42 automnes inutiles
pour les jeter dans
le maintenant ?

Hi Pierre,

I'm at a loss for words, but all I can say is that I understand completely.

Thank you, dear Oxeye for your answer. That is why I said it was a stupid question and yet...a useless monk like me often sees how far he is from its original, unfabricated, spontaneous true face, the faceless autumn. Real. You may read the final words of the diamond sutra and think, well that's it, this is all but a dream. Yes but it is also very real. Both can be said and both can be also shed: it is neither real nor a dream. Anyway, I often think I am not worthy of all this, stepping out of sitting 42 autumns see themselves as useless. In sitting, 42 autumns sit as one. Much love to you. Take care.

Michael, thank you for sharing a bit of my limited understanding.I think often about you. Will you come to Japan soon? Take great care of yourself.

Hi Pierre,

I truly appreciate your kind thoughts. I'm hoping to come to Japan in 2007 to finish (or at least complete more of) the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage. Of course, if I do come, I would love to get together with you in Kyoto.

Dear Pierre,

I hope you are very well although I wonder when you describe your years as useless. I suspect you do it with a smile on your lips.

If dharma is transmitting, it belongs to all existence. It is only all of existence manifesting as one. If transmitting is dharma, there is no shadow its light does not penetrate. In the moment of dharma transmitting, there has never been one moment in time in which all of existence did not possess everything of dharma.

'Useless' is a nice idea but we Buddhists can find no use for it.

Love,

Taito-san

Dearest Pierre,

Forgive this idiot - how can I teach anything? 'Nothing top say, no way to say it' as old Beckett would have it.

I have been making films in Iraq and my beautiful girls grow more surprising every day.

I have thought this tonight:

'Something wishes to express itself.

In this it finds itself obstructed.

It witnesses its obstruction and in doing so obstruction vanishes and it passes.

In passing, something realises itself.

It realises itself as passing.'

We will sing the Sandokai together one day.

The rain is falling and it is cold here, old Bear.

One day! My favourite is the young, first season sake.....

Dear Old Michael,

It is cold here too. Damp and humid. And the news of Anu's death makes it a bit colder.

I love it too.

Yes, one day!
